George Westwell, CEO of the Cheval Collection, retires after 50-year career in hospitality incorporating roles at Hilton, Holiday Inn and Crest Hotels
George Westwell, chief executive of serviced apartment provider the Cheval Collection, has retired, bringing to a close a 50-year career in the hospitality sector.
Westwell joined Cheval in 2004 following roles at Hilton, Holiday Inn and Crest Hotels.
He oversaw the launch of Cheval's flagship Three Quays property in London in 2014 and has transitioned the group from a long-stay accommodation provider to a dynamically priced competitor in the luxury hotel sector.
Last year, the group announced the addition of three properties in Scotland and, this year, will add a 'boutique' collection of apartments in London.
"Being an integral part of this expansion has been the perfect end to the most fulfilling career," says Westwell.
"I’m very sad to say goodbye but I know that I will watch Cheval continue to lead the way in serviced apartments with the expansion, loyal customer base, strategic vision and, most importantly, world-class team that I am so grateful to call my colleagues and friends."
Despite recent progress, Westwell believes the serviced apartment sector is still seen by many as a "below the stairs" industry and not one which requires a university degree to succeed. "We are overflowing with talent and skills that constantly amaze me," he says.
Westwell continues: "The pandemic has raised the profile of this sector at an accelerated rate and many [operators] have been able to continue trading throughout the pandemic. Their inherent strengths play into people’s desire for a feeling of security, flexibility, facilities and space.
"I hope that the industry continues to grow and develop, offering new and exciting opportunities, and that we keep a sense of balance and perspective."
