Construction work is set to affect passengers at East Midlands airport throughout 2013 as a £12 million upgrade to the terminal takes place.
A major refurbishment of the security area, reconfigured terminal layout and more shops are planned for the airport, which currently attracts 4.3 million passengers.
The investment is the biggest for 17 years and follows a series of airline developments over the summer. These have been mainly leisure-focused, but one recent business travel development is Flybe’s code share with Air France to offer a service to Charles de Gaulle. Ryanair has also expanded services to a number of European cities following the demise of bmibaby, which ceased operations in September.
East Midlands airport said work would be completed in phases in order to keep disruption to a minimum. New lighting and air conditioning means the airport will save 315 tonnes of carbon emissions a year and reduce energy usage by 15%.
