ThomsonFly, who inaugurated scheduled flights at Coventry Airport in March 2004, is to be joined next year by Hungarian airline Wizz. The carrier plans to operate a three times weekly (Wednesday, Friday, Sunday) service to Katowice using an 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. It will be the 21st city pair operated by Wizz between Poland and the UK. The airline”s main British hub is Luton but it does not serve any other Midlands airport. The airline follows the true low cost model with no pre-allocated seats and a payable snack and bar service on board.
Coventry Airport currently has a throughput of approaching 800,000 passengers per year, making it busier than Norwich and slightly less than another development in recent years, Doncaster Robin Hood. ThomsonFly currently operates ten destinations in Europe. The airport is currently awaiting the outcome of a local inquiry to build a permanent terminal for up to 2m passengers per year.
