Flights will resume from Shangha to Hong Kong after a 16-year break. Cathay Pacific Airways is to re-introduce a daily return service between Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok and Shanghai's new Pudong airport (subject to government approval).
Only Dragon Air and China Eastern are allowed to operate on the route at present. The introduction of the service follows a recent decision by the Hong Kong authorities to grant further airline traffic rights to fly passengers to mainland China's most important commercial hub. The service begins December 1 using Airbus A330-300/A340-300 aircraft. The passenger flights are in addition to the 12 freighter services Cathay Pacific already operates between Hong Kong and Shanghai each week.
Shanghai is an important mainland market for Cathay Pacific, accounting for 35% of the passenger market and 68% of the cargo business between the mainland and Hong Kong.
