Train operator Greater Anglia is to introduce free wi-fi at 100 stations over the next few months.
The project, with service provider The Cloud, will mean passengers at stations including Stansted Airport, Cambridge and Norwich will get fast web access on platforms and in station buildings. Usage is restricted to one hour a day at the participating stations. However, BSkyB customers will have free unlimited access.
Greater Anglia took over the region’s franchise from National Express in February.
The partnership with The Cloud means passengers should experience much faster browsing times than previously afforded by 3G.
Vince Russell, The Cloud managing director said: “We have seen usage on our network increase at an unprecedented pace in the last two years, and it shows no sign of slowing down. Our unique user base has doubled over the past six months showing there’s a real demand for wi-fi at busy high street locations and transport hubs around the UK.
