US Airways is to begin non-stop flights from Charlotte to Heathrow from March 2013.
The carrier said it will be able to start this new daily route after being awarded slots at Heathrow.
US Airways currently operates flights from Gatwick to Charlotte, as well as a daily service from Heathrow to Philadelphia. The airline said no decision had been taken yet on the future of the Gatwick-Charlotte route.
US Airways CEO Doug Parker said: “This new service will augment our existing transatlantic network and provide more choices for customers in markets up and down the east coast.”
The airline will use an Airbus A330 on the Charlotte-Heathrow route featuring its Envoy international business class cabin which includes seats that recline into a fully flat bed.
The new flight will start in Miami before travelling to US Airways’ Charlotte hub and then on to Heathrow. US Airways said it would announce full details of its schedule and fares “at a later date”.
“Today's news would not be possible without the support of several groups, including the European Union to which we are grateful for this opportunity,” added Parker.
