Icelandic airline Play has launched its third transatlantic route from London Stansted to New York Stewart International airport, via its Reykjavik hub.
The start-up carrier’s new route, which launched on Friday (10 June), means it now operates to three US destinations after already starting transatlantic services to Baltimore/Washington International and Boston Logan airports.
The new Stansted-New York service, which operates five days per week, includes a one hour 35-minute stopover in Reykjavik.
The airline is promoting Stewart airport as offering quicker access to Manhattan because of its faster times to clear US customs than the major New York airports JFK and Newark, as well as having good transport links.
Birgir Jonsson, Play’s CEO, said: “Almost one year after our very first flight took off from Stansted to Reykjavik, we’re over the moon to have launched our third US destination from the UK.
“Play’s ticket sales sky-rocketed 338 per cent in May 2022 when compared to January 2022, following the launch of our first flights to Baltimore/Washington and Boston, and the huge appetite for travel we’re experiencing across Europe.”
