ITA Airways has introduced ‘Green Fares’ on selected routes as part of its continued integration into the Lufthansa Group.
Green Fares include compensation for carbon emissions within the ticket price by using alternative aviation fuel and contributions to climate protection projects.
Lufthansa initially launched these fares in the Scandinavian market in August 2022 before expanding them across its short-haul network in February 2023 and throughout its global long-haul network in December 2024.
In the case of ITA, the fares are available across economy, premium and business class on domestic, European and select intercontinental routes. Green Fares are not available on flights to or from Japan, the US and Canada.
For European and domestic routes, 80 per cent of the estimated emissions per passenger are offset via contributions to climate protection projects, and 20 per cent by supporting the use of alternative fuels for future flights.
On intercontinental routes, 10 per cent goes toward alternative fuels and 90 per cent to climate protection projects, according to the carrier.
Green Fares also include extra miles and points within the Miles&More loyalty programme and “greater flexibility” for booking changes, ITA said in a statement.
“This product represents an important step forward in our journey toward reducing CO2 emissions and reflects our commitment, shared with the airlines of the Lufthansa Group, to promoting increasingly responsible practices integrated into the travel experience,” said Giovanna Di Vito, chief culture, sustainability, customer assistance and non-commercial partners at ITA Airways.
Earlier this month, Lufthansa announced plans to increase its stake in the Italian carrier to 90 per cent.
