IRAN wants flights to New York, according to a Reuters news agency report quoting state television. "We sent a letter to the relevant American officials (on Wednesday), announcing Iran's willingness to resume direct flights," Nourollah Rezai-Niaraki, head of Iran's Civil Aviation Organization, told viewers. The request comes as the US and its EU allies are pressing for the Islamic Republic to be reported to the UN Security Council where it could face possible sanctions for its nuclear programme. Iran has not flown to the US since the days of the Shah, when it also had route licences to JFK out of London. Tehran is currently served non-stop by both Iran Air and British Airways from Heathrow.
