BANGKOK”S new international airport (see ABTN 19 September) has received its first flight but it is not now expected to be officially open until June of next year, at the earliest. Claimed to be Thailand”s answer to Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, the futuristic Suvarnabhumi Airport is not without its difficulties. There are questions over finance (ie corruption), infrastructure and access. The airlines are having problems talking to the authorities and some think that the two-runway landmark operation will not even open in 2006.
