Budget hotel group Travelodge says it has become the largest hotel brand in London after opening a new 99-room hotel in Ealing.
Travelodge now has 5,714 rooms and 40 hotels in the capital, prompting the group to claim it has taken the title away from Hilton.
Guy Parsons, Travelodge’s CEO, said: “Nothing better demonstrates the evolution of Travelodge from our road side origins than becoming the biggest hotel brand in London,” said Parsons.
“Whilst others scaled back their development in the capital during the recession we maintained our commitment to growth. This ensured we secured sites in locations such as Bank, Twickenham and Vauxhall that are the envy of the hotel industry.”
Parsons added the brand aims to play a strong part in hosting visitors for the Olympic games in 2012: “The 5* and boutique hotels have a role to play but a strong budget hotel market ensures we can welcome the world with high quality low priced accommodation.”
Travelodge has announced eight new hotels that are under development in the capital, representing a £60 million investment in London. Locations include Balham, Finchley and Walthamstow.
Travelodge, which currently has 466 hotels across the UK, Ireland and Spain, plans to have 1,100 hotels in Europe by 2025.
