THE ASSOCIATION OF TRAIN OPERATING COMPANIES (ATOC) has urged government ministers to consult the rail industry regarding plans for high speed links between key UK cities.
The new government reiterated its commitment to a high-speed rail network in the Queen's Speech, prompting ATOC chief executive Michael Roberts to call for top-level consultation with train operators.
"The plans must be affordable at a time of real constraint in the public finances and show how high-speed rail will be paid for while continuing to invest in the existing network," Roberts said. "To keep the cost down for the taxpayer, we need to make the most of the private sector. Ministers should draw on the considerable knowledge and experience of train companies in making sure high-speed rail meets the needs of passengers and businesses."
