SIR RICHARD BRANSON has asked to be allowed to pump money into station improvements on Virgin Trains' route network. "Stations are clearly in need of major overhaul and, with public finances under constraint, the time is right for the private sector to be even more heavily involved in pioneering projects that would radically change public perceptions," he said.
His remarks came after transport secretary Lord Adonis revealed government plans to invest £50 million in station improvements.
Virgin operates 17 rail stations but, under the terms of its franchise, it is not allowed to carry out major improvements.
The train operating company wants to introduce features such as new business meeting rooms, lounges (above) and waiting rooms. Tony Collins, Virgin Trains' chief executive officer, said: "We would relish the chance to make significant changes within our franchise agreement and I would be keen to discuss with Lord Adonis how quickly this could be achieved."
