SAS CEO Anko van der Werff will join Air Canada in early 2027
SAS president and CEO Anko van der Werff has resigned and will become CEO of Air Canada in early 2027, the Scandinavian airline confirmed on Wednesday (8 July).
Van der Werff will remain in his current role until his departure in January 2027, the SAS board said, to ensure “stability and continuity as SAS continues to execute its strategic priorities and deliver reliable operations”.
In a statement the board confirmed it will now initiate the process of appointing van der Werff’s successor.
Since van der Werff joined SAS in 2021, the carrier has undergone significant change, having completed a comprehensive restructuring after existing Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2024 and joining the SkyTeam alliance. Earlier this year the airline also announced a ‘record’ order of up to 40 Airbus widebody aircraft, the largest fleet investment in SAS’ history.
“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Anko for his strong leadership and commitment during a highly demanding transformation period,” said chairman Kåre Schultz. “He has played a central role in building a stronger and more competitive SAS with a clear direction and important opportunities ahead. We respect his decision, while naturally regretting his departure.”
Van der Werff added: “This has not been an easy decision. I have greatly valued my time at SAS and the opportunity to work alongside so many dedicated colleagues.
“Until I leave at the beginning of 2027, my focus remains on SAS. There are important priorities ahead, and I remain fully committed to delivering reliable operations and a high-quality experience for customers, colleagues and stakeholders every day,” he said in a statement.
Van der Werff is set to take the helm at Air Canada at the end of January 2027. He succeeds Michael Rousseau, who previously announced his retirement after 19 years with the Canadian airline.
