London City airport was shut down on Sunday following the discovery of a World War Two bomb in the nearby King George V dock and will remain closed today while authorities deal with the ordinance.
All flights in and out of the airport are subject to cancellation and passengers are advised to check with their airline directly for more information.
The bomb was found early Sunday morning during planned works at the airport, according to the BBC.
Robert Sinclair, CEO of London City airport, said: “I recognise this is causing inconvenience for our passengers, and in particular some of our local residents. The airport is cooperating fully with the Met Police and Royal Navy and working hard to safely remove the device and resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
Irish carrier Cityjet has announced it will operate an alternative schedule between Dublin and Southend airport and that any passengers who were due to fly to Dublin should make their way to Southend.
Meanwhile, the British Airways website has advised that it is awaiting further information from the authorities and is “keeping the situation under review”. It says anyone due to travel from the airport today should “continue to check on ba.com for the very latest information”.
Flybe is warning passengers “not to travel to the airport until further notice”.
In addition to cancellations at London City, the Docklands Light Railway is closed between Pontoon Dock and Woolwich Arsenal.
