Central London is to go car-free for one day in September with more than 12 miles of roads set to close to cars.
The initiative from London mayor Sadiq Khan will take place on Sunday, 22 September, with car-free areas set to include Tower Bridge, London Bridge and much of the City of London.
“London is leading the way in innovative measures to improve air pollution and I want this year’s Car Free Day events to be the best of any world city," explained Khan.
“This will be a great opportunity for us all to leave our cars behind and explore our streets by foot, or by bike.”
A series of themed events will also be held around London throughout the car-free day, which will promote walking, cycling and public transport.
Khan added these events would go under the theme of Reimagine and give residents and visitors the chance to see what the city would be like without cars and traffic.
The initiative comes after Transport for London introduced the new Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in the centre of the capital, with private hire vehicles and minicabs no longer able to avoid the Congestion Charge in effect across much of the city centre.
