The Safer Transport at Night campaign has won the 14th annual Goldstein Award for Problem Orientated Policing 2006. The campaign was established in 2002 as a joint venture between the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, Transport for London and the Metropolitan Police, to address the problem of illegal minicabs in the capital.
Since its launch the percentage of women using illegal minicabs has fallen from 19 per cent to four per cent, and sexual attacks in illegal minicabs have fallen from 18 to 10 a month.
The project has succeeded in getting CCTV cameras fitted in all London buses by the end of 2005. It has also increased the number of night buses, made the licensing of all minicabs mandatory, and made taxi touting a recordable offence.
