The availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at European airports is set to “significantly” increase following a deal between specialist producer Neste and supplier World Fuel Services.
The agreement between the two companies will allow World Fuel Services to supply SAF to 40 airports around Europe – currently it only distributes the sustainable fuel to 13 European airports.
US-based World Fuel Services is a global energy supplier to European commercial, business and general aviation customers. It expects to deliver 20 times the volume of SAF this year than it did in 2022.
The new deal with Finland-based Neste will also “pave the way” to supplying SAF at more than 100 airports in World Fuel Services’ European network.
Alexander Kueper, vice president EMEA, at Neste’s renewable aviation business unit, said: “Working closely with partners like World Fuel Services is crucial as it will help us accelerate the supply and usage of sustainable aviation fuel across World Fuel's extensive global network of airports.
“We are excited to expand our collaboration with World Fuel as we increase our annual SAF production capability to 1.5 million tons per annum by the end of 2023.”
SAF reduces carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent over the lifecycle of the fuel, compared with traditional kerosene jet fuel. The aviation industry hopes that using SAF will be its primary method of achieving net-zero on carbon emissions by 2050.
“We are excited to have created a framework that enables us to more reliably provide our customers across Europe with SAF in a timely and expedient manner,” said Duncan Storey, vice president, supply aviation Europe at World Fuel Services.
“This initiative is another example of the many actions we have taken to bring renewable fuels and sustainable practices to a wider audience.”
