A China Eastern Airlines aircraft carrying 133 passengers and crew has crashed in China’s Guangxi province.
Domestic flight MU5735 was travelling from Kunming to Guangzhou in southern China on Monday (21 March) when it was reported to have crashed near the city of Wuzhou at around 2.20pm local time.
Chinese officials said that the number of casualties was “unknown” and rescue teams had been sent to the area. There are reports that the crash triggered a wildfire after coming down in a mountainous forested area.
Flight tracking sites showed that the Boeing 737-800 had been in the air for around one hour before rapidly losing altitude.
The Boeing 737-800 is not the same type of aircraft as the Boeing 737 Max, which suffered two fatal crashes in October 2018 and March 2019.
