Sweden’s Scandic Hotels and
Norway’s Thon Hotels have been named as the most sustainable hotel brands in
their countries.
Scandic has been named as the most
sustainable hotel brand in the Sustainable Brand Index industry ranking for Sweden
for the eleventh year in a row.
In 2020, the group launched a new sustainability strategy which
included using 100 per cent renewable electricity, reducing water use to 160
litres per guest night, reducing CO2 emissions to 2.3kg per guest night,
and reducing waste to a maximum of 0.62kg per guest night.
Magnus Ljungberg, sustainability director at the group,
said: “It feels absolutely fantastic that thousands of consumers have named us
the industry's most sustainable brand, year after year. For us, this is proof
that Scandic leads the way by being the most inclusive company for the many
people, continues to lead the development towards better food and beverage with
less impact and works to offer all our guests the most sustainable room
experience.”
Thon Hotels has over 70 hotels in Norway and has in
recent years had a strong focus on waste and food waste, energy and ethical
requirements for suppliers.
The group’s sustainability adviser, Anders N
Rylander, said: “We work systematically with sustainability, and it feels great
that consumers recognise the work we do. We will use this as inspiration and
motivation to further develop our sustainability work.”
Sokos Hotels in Finland, Comwell
Hotels in Denmark and Van der Valk in the Netherlands are among the others
topping the hotels category in their countries.
The index is based on more than 60,000 interviews
with consumers in the Nordics, the
Netherlands & the Baltics.
