Singapore Airlines has opened its new digital innovation lab.
Known as "KrisLab", it is part of the SIA Group’s bid to become "the world’s leading digital airline".
It has been formed with Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the National University of Singapore. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and the Economic Development Bureau also support the initiative.
KrisLab will allow SIA Group staff to develop innovative ideas with external partners, start-ups, incubators and accelerators. Blockchain, artificial intelligence and data analytics, among others, are used and explored by staff, who can submit ideas and solutions for evaluation by the Digital Innovation Lab team.
For example, KrisLab is using virtual reality technology to revolutionise the design of cabin interiors, and working with A*STAR and the NUS on revenue management, smart seats, virtual training, and predictive maintenance for aircraft.
Meanwhile, SIA has launched another programme called LIFE (Learning and Innovation for Everyone) to "nurture digital mindsets". LIFE is a three day learning event for SIA Group staff who want to be part of the airline's transformation. It will comprise workshops, expert talks and peer learning opportunities from across the airline group.
“The launch of KrisLab is a significant step forward in our digital transformation journey and encapsulates our ambition to be the leading digital airline in the world,” said Goh Choon Phong, chief executive of Singapore Airlines.
“We are committed to further enhancing our digital capabilities by providing the right tools and infrastructure for staff to develop their ideas, as well as collaborating with external partners and start-ups to help solve business challenges.”
