David Radcliffe, the former chief executive of Hogg Robinson Group and non-executive director of American Express Global Business Travel, has died aged 67.
The Radcliffe family confirmed his passing on Saturday 4th July in Hampshire following a recent deterioration in his health.
Radcliffe had a prestigious career in travel and was inducted in to the BTN Group’s Hall of Fame in 2017 and the British Travel & Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2014.
He worked at Hogg Robinson from 1978, led the largest management buyout of its kind in 2000 and took the business public again in 2006.
Radcliffe was CEO of the Group in February 2018 when Amex GBT moved to purchase its fellow TMC and he continued to serve as a non-executive director of the combined business following completion of the transaction in July 2018.
David leaves his wife Paula, two children Danielle and Mark, and four grandchildren who he adored.
Paul Abbott, chief executive of Amex GBT, says: “David dedicated his
life to the travel business. His passion and determination created
opportunities for many thousands of people around the world.
“We have been honoured to have David on our board since the acquisition of HRG, and are proud to carry his legacy forward.
“He
will be profoundly missed by many people in our business and across the
industry. Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences are with
David’s wife and family at this difficult time.”
David Scowsill, former president and CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council, paid tribute to Radcliffe, describing him as “an iconic personality in the travel industry”.
“In 20 years as chief executive, he presided over a period of enormous change, whether internal to the company to stay competitive or external to react to challenges driven by 9/11 and the global financial crisis.
“His personality drove lasting relationships with suppliers and customers alike, as he led the company with panache ultimately to an acquisition by Amex GBT.
“His wry sense of humour made him popular with those that he dealt with and you could rely on him to always speak his mind.”
He will be sadly missed by his very many industry colleagues, friends and Hogg Robinson family.
