Talks are slated for 14:30 this afternoon (4 September) between the RMT union, Metronet, the Administrator and Transport for London (TfL) as the second day of industrial action causes chaos in the capital.
Millions of commuters have endured transport misery this morning struggling into work, as strike action by 2,300 RMT workers continues to paralyse most of London.
But despite the walk-out slated to last until 18:00 on Thursday evening, there may be a glimmer of hope as negotiations between the sides have been arranged for this afternoon.
”That is a positive development and we hope that Metronet and its Administrator will now take our members” legitimate concerns seriously,” said RMT general secretary, Bob Crow.
”Instead of shouting insults and pointing accusing fingers, all those involved should now recognise that those concerns need to be addressed. Our members have shown their determination by delivering a rock-sold strike and, pending any positive outcome from today”s talks, it will remain on.”
Roads approached virtual gridlock in central London during rush hour this morning, with commuters attempting to board packed buses that then crawled through traffic-choked streets.
TfL says it is providing extra staff to help give passengers advice and walking maps, while Police and Community Support Officers have been managing queues at bus stops.
”We urge passengers to leave extra time for their journeys today and to consider other transport modes, including walking and cycling,” said a TfL spokesman.
