Flights out of several airports on the east coast of the US have been delayed or cancelled in the wake of a winter storm stretching from North Carolina to New England.
The departure boards at New York’s JFK and Laguardia, Newark and Boston Logan airports all show cancellations and delays throughout the morning as the storm brings heavy snow and blizzard conditions to the area.
In coastal areas of New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut, the snow is causing roads to become slick and white-out conditions are slowing traffic. Meanwhile, an Amtrak passenger train partially derailed in Savannah, Georgia yesterday, although no one on board was injured.
The storm brought disruption to the south east of the country yesterday, with some areas of Florida seeing snow for the first time in decades. Conditions in the north east are compounding a long-standing cold snap that has seen arctic temperatures in the region for more than a week.
Anyone travelling to or from the east coast are advised to check the status of their flight before departing, though some services may be cancelled at short notice as airlines monitor conditions at airports in the area.
