Dubai’s second airport Dubai World Central (DWC) has increased passenger numbers by 35 per cent in the first six months of 2017.
Passenger traffic rose to 555,000 for the first half the year compared with 410,000 passengers during the same period last year. By comparison, Dubai International catered for a record-breaking 43 million passengers between January and June.
The rise at DWC was achieved through increasing the average number of passengers onboard each flight from 90 to 121 over the last year.
Low-cost carrier Flydubai currently uses Dubai World Central for some of its flights with plans for the airline to shift its entire operations to the airport by the end of this year.
Wizz Air is also among the other airlines currently operating from DWC.
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said: “Overall DWC performed well in the first half of the year with both scheduled and chartered carriers contributing to traffic volumes at the airport.
“DWC’s continuing growth as an important travel and logistics hub is driven by advantages the facility offers to both airlines and passengers - from easy availability of slots to quick turn-around times, access to new catchment area, and quick transit times for passengers.”
