Spanair has added Madrid-Barcelona to its mobile boarding card service, after the success of its use in Bilbao.
Focusing on business travellers, the system allows passengers to receive a boarding card via a multi-media message, following IATA”s publication of a mobile boarding standard.
Customers can check-in via the internet in the traditional way, or by using the new phone service. After that, a multi-media message will be sent to the mobile containing a 2D barcode that will allow automated boarding.
Passengers then pass the code through a relevant scanner to obtain a paper receipt in order to process through security.
The free service will be of particular relevance to passengers travelling home from a trip, a Spanair spokeswoman confirmed to ABTN from Spain.
This could be for example, where a hotel does not have internet facilities or where a passenger is in a taxi en route and could feasibly save time on the check-in procedure.
