A new cabin bag policy on Ryanair flights meant to be rolled out in November has been delayed until January 15 “to allow customers time to adjust to the changes” over the Christmas period.
The new policy has already seen Ryanair cut checked bag fees from €35 to €25 and increase hold baggage weight from 15kg to 20kg in a move the airline says hopes will encourage less carry-on luggage.
However, from January 15 only priority boarding customers – including Plus, Flexi Plus and Family Plus – will be allowed to bring two carry-on bags. All other passengers will only be permitted to bring one small bag into the cabin, while second bags will be placed in the hold free of charge at the boarding gate.
Ryanair’s Kenny Jacobs claims the volume of passengers bringing two carry-on bags is to blame for late-running services and says the new policy “will speed up the boarding of flights and eliminate flight delays”.
The airline has hit headlines in recent weeks for axing thousands of flights in an effort it said would improve its punctuality rates following a pilot roster failure, causing outrage among customers.
