A number of flights across the UK were forced to land after reports of fumes and “smoke smells”, which have now been attributed to weather conditions that are causing a reddish tint to skies above the country.
Winds from former hurricane Ophelia have carried sand from the Sahara Desert, as well as ash and smoke from forest fires raging in Portugal and Spain.
Easyjet, Aurigny and British Airways have confirmed that some flights were forced to land after reports of strange smells in the cockpits of planes, but all incidents have been linked to the atmospheric conditions.
Meanwhile, Ophelia has reach Ireland, forcing the cancellation of multiple flights to and from many airports in the country. All passengers are advised to continue checking with their airline on the status of their flight.
