Ryanair’s Irish pilots have called off plans for a pre-Christmas strike after the airline said it would start recognising unions for the first time.
Members of the Irish pilots union IMPACT had called for a one-day strike on Wednesday (December 20) but it has now suspended this action following Ryanair’s announcement on Friday.
Unions in other countries, including Portugal, Germany, Italy and Spain, had already called of their planned industrial action.
Impact said that it had arranged to meet with Ryanair’s management on Tuesday (December 19) for negotiations over union recognition to begin.
“The union acknowledged the principled determination of Ryanair pilots, which it said had made this breakthrough possible, and said it looked forward to establishing a positive relationship with Ryanair company management,” said IMPACT in a statement.
“IMPACT added that it hoped the suspension of industrial action would remove any uncertainty for passengers intending to travel on Wednesday.
