Swiss is to start thrice-weekly services between London and Bucharest, via Geneva, starting from April, 2008. Flights will be operated using Airbus A319s, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The new route will bring the number of services provided by Swiss to Romania via Geneva up to ten, and all flights via Geneva up to 23.
Swiss” new connection to Bucharest will further strengthen the airline”s position within the South-Eastern European market, and is a timely addition after Romania”s recent accession to the European Union on 1 January, 2007.
”Our new service to Bucharest is a further sign of our commitment to Geneva as one of our three national airports,” commented Swiss chief network officer, Harry Hohmeister. ”And we firmly intend to continue with our current Geneva expansion.”
Easyjet on the other hand, has temporarily suspended its use of Bucharest”s Baneasa airport, stating that it does not meet its operational requirements. A spokesperson for the airline told ABTN that they were unable to disclose the specific reasons for their withdrawal from Baneasa as of 10 September.
The airline is instead using the Henri Coanda International Airport, also in Bucharest, and formerly known as Otopeni Airport. The spokesperson confirmed that a shuttle between the two airports is being provided for passengers who are unaware of the changes and arrive at Baneasa by mistake.
Swiss passengers also have access to Swiss” daily services to Bucharest from Manchester, Birmingham and London via Zurich. From the UK and Ireland, the airline operates a total of 30 daily flights.
