Munich Airport's dynamic growth is set to continue in the fourth quarter of this year.
For the new winter timetable, due to start on Sunday, October 31, 2010 and continue until March 26, 2011, airlines have scheduled approximately 3 percent more flights than in the previous year. The average weekly number of scheduled take-offs and landings is up from just less than 7,000 to more than 7,200.
This winter, vacationers and busi-ness travelers departing from or stopping over in the Bavarian capital can choose among 194 non-stop routes to foreign destinations, including 51 intercontinental destinations in North and South America, Asia and Africa. During the winter season 99 airlines will be operating flights from Munich Airport to 214 destinations in 68 countries. The intercontinental segment remains one of the main factors driving growth.
For the first time Lufthansa will be offering its long-haul flights to Montreal and Washington – previously seasonal routes – in the winter as well, each with five departures per week. The airline is also boosting its service to Miami from two to five flights a week.
Starting at the beginning of March, Qatar Airways will add four new weekly flights to Doha, bringing the total to 11. With the start of the winter timetable, Lufthansa will be operating flights from Munich to Luxembourg for the first time. With its partner airline Luxair, it will depart from Munich for the Grand Duchy at the French-Belgian border five times a week.
Cyprus Airways is making a comeback in Munich, offering two weekly flights to the Cypriot port city of Larnaca.
To complement its existing service to East Midlands Airport, near Nottingham, BMIBaby is starting the winter season by adding a new destination in the UK, with three weekly flights to Cardiff, in Wales. At the same time it is increasing the frequency of service to East Midlands Airport from three to five flights a week.
Adria Airways is offering daily departures to Priština, the capital of Kosovo.
SunExpress is launching new services to Turkey in time for the winter timetable period, serving both Adana and Kayseri with one weekly flight, and with two weekly departures to Ankara. The Turkish airline is also expanding its service to Istanbul to six flights a week with the addition of one new flight. www.munich-airport.de
