Manchester Airports Group has reported growth in October compared to last year, but Manchester’s passenger numbers dropped slightly compared to September as a result of Monarch’s collapse.
Manchester saw year-on-year growth of 3.1 per cent, with 2.4 million passengers travelling through its halls. MAG says it has seen a boost thanks to Singapore Airlines’ direct flight to Houston, but was affected by the loss of Monarch flights, which accounted for 5.4 per cent of flights from the airport in September. The group says it has seen strong interest from other airlines to take over the carrier’s slots in order to operate new services.
Meanwhile, Stansted served a record number of passengers, seeing an increase of 7.3 per cent year on year to 2.3 million. MAG says the growth came despite the number of Ryanair cancellations it saw in the wake of the carrier’s pilot rostering failure. The group comments that it expects to see even more passengers in the coming months, boosted by the introduction of several new routes and more frequency on existing ones.
East Midlands airport also saw record passenger numbers, growing 3.5 per cent from October last year, while its cargo tonnage increased by 8.6 per cent. Lastly, Bournemouth remained flat at 69,000 passengers.
