The Lufthansa group has confirmed an order for 27 Airbus A320neo and A321neo short and medium-haul aircraft to be used by its airlines.
The group has now ordered a total of 149 ‘neo’ family aircraft, representing an investment of US$3 billion.
The latest order is due to begin delivery in 2023, with ten assigned to Swiss and the rest to be divided among the group’s other airlines, which includes Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, Germanwings and Eurowings Europe.
Lufthansa says part of the new fleet will be fitted with engines from Pratt & Whitney, while the rest will have CFM International engines. The group claims both options, combined with aerodynamic wingtips, help reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 per cent per seat kilometre.
The ‘neo’ family Airbus aircraft are also designed to reduce the noise footprint, with the A320neo’s ‘noise carpet’ around 50 per cent smaller on take-off than other aircraft of its type.
Lufthansa already operates 13 of the A320neo and A321neo aircraft in its existing fleet.
