Lufthansa is to start direct services to eight European cities from Milan Malpensa next year.
The German national carrier said the new services to Barcelona, Brussels, Budapest, Bucharest, Madrid and Paris would begin next February.
In the summer, routes to London and Lisbon would be added.
Karl Ulrich Garnadt, executive vice president of Lufthansa Passenger Airlines, said: "Milan Malpensa”s catchment area extends as far as the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland and is one of the key economic regions in Europe.”
He said the new operations would create 150 new jobs in the North Italian city.
Lufthansa currently runs 185 flights a week from Malpensa and Milan's second airport at Linate, to five German cities.
