Lufthansa is to launch a new route from Munich to Sibiu (formerly known as Hermannstadt) on 1 September.
Initially five times a week it will go daily from 28 October when the winter timetable begins. A Bombardier Dash 8-300 will be used for the service with a flight time of around 2h 30m.
The new route is the third offering by Lufthansa to Romania, the airline already serving Bucharest and Timisoara from Munich. Romanian airline Tarom already operates twice-daily flights, also using a turboprop ” an ATR 42.
With its extended catchment area, the Transylvanian city of Sibiu has a population of more than five million. Since Romania joined the European Union (EU) in 2007, its economy has expanded significantly and Romania conducts most of its foreign trade with the EU, Germany being the largest trading partner of the Transylvania region.
Around 15,000 companies with German investment have been set up in this area, including numerous firms in the engineering and plant manufacturing sector, the textile industry, the construction industry and the chemical and pharmaceutical sector.
Sibiu is also a major tourist attraction: the mediaeval city in the foothills of the Southern Carpathian Mountains is one of the two European Capitals of Culture in 2007.
