En route back from the ACTE conference a couple of weeks ago, I accepted the generous offer from a hotel company to share a taxi to the airport.
All was well until we reached the hugely impressive Allianz arena - where Bayern Munich plies its trade - on the motorway ” where the driver decided to put his foot down.
Sat in the front seat, I gazed in astonishment as the speedometer needle reached the 160kmh (100mph) mark ” and kept heading resolutely north.
Given the fact there were four of us in the taxi with all our luggage from the conference, it was a testament to the power of German engineering, but as the driver then got on his mobile phone and weaved between lanes, I vainly tried to look blankly ahead.
Arrival ” safely ” at the airport and other delegates could also be heard exchanging similar white knuckle ride stories. I hear there”s due to be a fast train service linking the airport with downtown Munich ” it can”t come quickly enough.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone, has been loudly trumpeting the fact that ”there will be no increase in any single fares, whether using Oyster or cash, on London”s bus, Tube, tram and DLR network.” A single cash fare from Piccadilly Circus to Leicester Square ” a distance walkable in around two minutes - costs a cool ”4.
