Frankfurt Airport (FRA) says
1.1 million passengers passed through in September, an 82.9 per cent decline
compared to the same month last year. For the year so far, cumulative traffic fell
by 70.2 per cent on 2019.
“Low passenger
demand resulted from persisting travel restrictions and the uncertainties for
travel planning in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said a statement from the airport.
It said that cargo
throughput had only dipped by 5.0 per cent year-on-year.
The Fraport group manages
airports around the world and these have also been negatively affected.
Ljubljana Airport
(LJU) in Slovenia recorded a decline of 87.4 per cent in September 2020, while the
Brazilian airports of Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA) registered a
combined traffic drop of 68.0 per cent. At Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru, traffic
plunged by 92.1 per cent.
Fraport's 14 Greek
airports posted a 61.3 per cent decline while Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) in
Bulgaria saw combined traffic slide by 75.6 per cent.
Others in the group’s
portfolio have performed less badly. Antalya Airport (AYT) in Turkey received
about 2.3 million passengers – a decrease of 53.4 per cent – and traffic at Pulkovo
Airport (LED) in St Petersburg, Russia, shrank by 29.1 per cent to around 1.4
million passengers.
China’s Xi’an
Airport (XIY) has maintained its recovery path and reduced the rate of decline
to 9.5 per cent year-on-year.
