Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with the government of Chad to establish a new national carrier for the country.
The news comes just days after the airline announced it was working with the Zambian government to revive Zambia Airways, which was liquidated in 1995.
Ethiopian will own a 49 per cent stake in the new Chad national carrier, while the country’s government will hold 51 per cent.
The new airline is expected to go into operation on 1 October.
Tewolde Gebremariam, group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, said: “The strategic equity partnership in the launching of the new Chad international carrier is part of our Vision 2025 multiple hub strategy in Africa. The new Chad national carrier will serve as a strong hub in Central Africa, availing domestic, regional and eventually international air connectivity to the major destinations in the Middle East, Europe and Asia. I wish to thank His Excellency president Idriss Deby Itno, the government of Chad and the stakeholders in the aviation sector in Chad for their strong support to the project.”
