Ethiopian Airlines has finalised a shareholder’s agreement with the government of Zambia to re-launch Zambia Airways.
The government of Zambia will own 55 per cent of the airline, while Ethiopian will have a 45 per cent stake. Zambia Airways was liquidated in 1995, but Ethiopian says it is re-establishing the carrier as part of its aim to set up multiple hubs in Africa, adding to its existing ties with Asky Airlines in Togo (Togolese Republic) and Malawian in Malawi.
Ethiopian says Zambia Airways will initially serve national and regional destinations before expanding internationally.
Tewolde Gebremariam, group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, commented: “In line with our Vision 2025 multiple hubs strategy in Africa, we are happy that the discussions with the Zambian government have been crowned with success. The launching of Zambia Airways will enable the travelling public in Zambia and the southern African region to enjoy greater connectivity options, thereby facilitating the flow of investment, trade and tourism, and contributing to the socio-economic growth of the country and the region.”
