Nectar points earned from the weekly shop can soon be exchanged for Easyjet flights, after the airline entered a partnership with the loyalty scheme.
From March 22, Nectar cardholders will be able to pay for flights and taxes in full using their points, or by using a combination points and cash.
Points can be earned at a number of UK retailers, including Nectar founders BP and Sainsbury’s.
The airline has no plans to offer Nectar members the opportunity to earn points on Easyjet flights, however.
Carolyn McCall, Easyjet’s CEO, said: “Unlike traditional flight point schemes, it will allow customers to choose to get a discount on any flight, any day across the easyJet network.”
The partnership is the first commercial initiative for easyJet since the new brand license agreement, said McCall.
The airline ended a dispute with its founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou by amending its brand licence agreement last October.
Sir Stelios had threatened the airline with taking away its rights to the Easy brand, in a legal wrangle which went to the High Court.
The airline's founder had argued that Easyjet's operations had outgrown the terms of its brand agreement, which required Easyjet to receive 75% of its income from "core activities".
Easyjet can now generate unlimited revenues from ancillary sales, and can enter new co-branding deals with other travel service providers, but must pay 0.25% of its total revenues to Sir Stelios.
The new deal with Nectar “demonstrates how, through partnering, we can offer even more to our customers,” said McCall.
