Easyjet boss Johan Lundgren has volunteered to have his pay cut by £34,000 to match his predecessor Dame Carolyn McCall’s salary.
Lundgren’s starting salary was £740,000 a year when he took over in December, though McCall’s was £706,000 when she left for ITV. He has now said that to demonstrate his commitment to “address the gender imbalance” he has asked the board to cut his pay to match that of McCall.
In a statement, Easyjet said it was “absolutely committed to giving equal pay and equal opportunity for women and men”.
Lundgren said he wants to address a gender imbalance in the pilot community, saying Easyjet has set a target for 20 per cent of its new pilots to be female by 2020. The airline blames its 51.7 per cent gender pay gap on the fact that 94 per cent of pilots – who have higher salaries than other employees – are male.
Easyjet was named Best Short-Haul Airline in the 2018 Business Travel Awards.
