BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, to give it its full title, and Eldom Airport according to the Birmingham Post, has celebrated 65 years of British Airways. In fact when the first commercial flight took place in 1939 the then British Airways had been flying for two years (it was later that year to amalgamate the Imperial Airways as BOAC). Rod Eddington, himself a visitor to Birmingham in his student days, was on hand to lead the celebrations in the spacious Terrace Lounge. The De Havilland Dragon Rapide DH89 fabric covered biplane has today been replaced by the AVRO (DH 146) RJ, Bombardier (DH) Dash 8 and Embraer 145 jets serving 17 regional destinations out of Birmingham.
