Potential link with Australian carrier
BA confirmed today (December 2) that it is in merger talks with Qantas.
It said it was exploring a potential merger with the Australian carrier and fellow member of the oneworld alliance.
BA's full statement read: "In response to recent media speculation, British Airways Plc confirms that it is exploring a potential merger with Qantas Airways Limited via a dual-listed company structure.
"The discussions between British Airways and Iberia are continuing.
"There is no guarantee that any transaction will be forthcoming and a further announcement will be made in due course, if appropriate."
BA's talks with Iberia were progressing well, Willie Walsh, its ceo, said in October and could reach a conclusion next March.
BA which has also applied to the US Department of Transportation for anti-trust immunity with American Airlines and Iberia, also both oneworld members, to allow closer co-operation between the three carriers.
A decision is due next year.
BA which in recent months has talked of creating a super airline, has also been linked with another oneworld member Cathay Pacific.
