From June 1 Austrian Airlines will be introducing new rules on the amount of baggage passengers are allowed to check-in for free as hold luggage.
These new rules have been in place on flights from its Vienna hub to the USA and Canada for “some time”, according to the airline.
Currently, the Austrian Airlines has a general weight rule. Passengers travelling in economy class are allowed to check-in as many bags as they like free of charge, up to a maximum of 20kg, while for business class the total weight limit is 30kg.
With the new rules, for passengers who book their tickets after June 1, economy passengers will be allowed to check in only one of item of luggage free of charge weighing up to 23kg, while for business class passengers the limit will be two bags, each weighing up to 32kg.
For excess baggage the rules will also change. The current fees are based on the route flown, and are charged per 1kg of excess weight. For example, flights to the UK are charged at €15 per kg.
Under the new rules, a second item of hold baggage in economy class weighing up to 23kg or a third item in business weighing up to 32kg will cost a set fee of €50.
