American Airlines is closing operations at London Gatwick after 26 years at the airport as it moves three flights to Heathrow as Open Skies liberalisation begins.
From 30 March, it moves a Dallas/Fort Worth plus the Raleigh/Durham services, followed on 13 April by its second daily Dallas flight.
The airline says all Gatwick employees have been offered jobs at its other London locations.
”We want to strengthen our competitive position within the new ”Open Skies” regime, so it makes sense to focus our efforts in London at Heathrow,” said American”s senior vice president for planning, Henry Joyner.
”These changes do not impact the total number of American flights to and from London. We”ll operate up to 18 daily departures to Heathrow this summer from seven US airports.”
The carrier”s gateway cities from Heathrow will be New York JFK, Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and Raleigh/Durham.
It will continue to serve Stansted from New York JFK, adding a second daily rotation there on 1 August.
