Two years after the airline launched mobile boarding passes on domestic routes, American Airlines (AA) passengers can now use the technology to check in for flights at Heathrow.
Travellers checking in online for AA flights from LHR can now opt to receive their boarding pass on their mobile phone, instead of printing out a paper version.
The technology was introduced on AA's domestic flights in 2008, and Heathrow is the airline's first international destination to offer the service.
Passengers must have an internet-enabled mobile phone to use the service, to receive mobile boarding pass. This contains a 2-D barcode that can be scanned at security checkpoints and at American Airlines gates.
AA plans to extend mobile boarding to other international destinations, but has yet to announce locations.
Andrew Watson, AA's VP Customer Technology, said: "We know our customers are mobile by definition, which is why the option to leverage personal devices to expedite travel has been so popular with our customers over the past two years."
