Digital Head Up Display (HUD) technology has been approved for use on Airbus A318 and A318 Elite aircraft by the European Aviation Safety Agency.
The system makes approaches and landings significantly easier for pilots by presenting flight information and guidance on a glass plate mounted in their forward field of view.
Aircraft will be able to take-off and land in poorer conditions ” take-off visibility requirements would be lowered from 410ft (125m) to 246ft.
”Travellers should benefit because flights will be less affected by bad weather,” said an Airbus spokesman.
”Airlines can choose to have HUD, and it will make their services less susceptible to delays.”
The technology should subsequently be extended to other Airbus aircraft, with certification ongoing for the A330, A340 and A380.
