LIVERPOOL JOHN LENNON AIRPORT has celebrated the return of Aer Lingus after an absence of 14 years. The Irish carrier was one of the first airlines to operate from what was then known as Speke, having established links with Dublin in 1936, almost 70 years ago, but stopped flying the route in 1990. With the new terminal building and passenger numbers rapidly rising to over 3m per year, Aer Lingus announced in July the decision to re-establish their links with Liverpool by adding a daily service to Dublin. The new operation also offers alternative routing to New York with Aer Lingus passengers able to check-in at Liverpool and connect at Dublin. In addition passengers to American destinations clear all US Immigration checks at Dublin, avoiding the delays encountered by other passengers who are processed upon arrival in the US. Such a system is not available at any UK airport.
