All Nippon Airways (ANA) has partnered with Show Shell Sekiyu KK to purchase 70,000 US gallons of sustainable aviation fuel that will see the airline reduce its emissions by around 150 tonnes.
The carrier will mix bio jet fuel – sourced from World Energy – with the current fuel used on its San Francisco flights in an effort to help tackle climate change.
Sustainable fuel has previously been introduced on ANA’s aircraft at Los Angeles International airport and has been regularly used by the carrier in the past. However, the airline says this is the first direct contract it has had in place to purchase bio fuel.
ANA says the move to bio fuel will help its vision of meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the United Nations, particularly the goal to provide “affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all” and to combat climate change.
Naoto Takada, EVP of ANA, said: “At ANA, we believe that the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals represent a blueprint to a more prosperous and more environmentally responsible future, and we are inspired by the SDG commitment to ‘build a better world for people and our planet’. Adopting sustainable aviation fuel is just one step in the fight against climate change, and ANA will continue looking for ways to give back to the planet that we all depend on.”
