Our anonymous travel buyer asks why the UK falls at the first flake...

Once again our biggest airport and one of the busiest hubs in Europe grinds to a halt with only 6 flights operating at peak times on a busy Friday in January, just because of a few flakes of snow! Perhaps some consultation with some of our neighbouring countries who really know what it like to be “snowed” in might help alleviate this problem. Take Switzerland, Norway, Sweden for examples, you rarely hear of them cancelling flights.
Despite promises of being prepared, the airlines, snow ploughs and de-icers couldn’t cope, and the result is hundreds of stranded passengers in the terminals and general chaos. Definitely not one of LHR finest hours!
With Heathrow being one of the most expensive airports to fly from, with the extortionate air passenger tax, it makes it an even less attractive route when there could be closures due to bad weather. Surely some of the air passenger tax could be spent on improving facilities in the event of snow.
Let’s hope “spring is sprung” and there is no more snow this winter.... maybe by the end of this year BAA will have figured it out in time for our next snow storm.
